For years, smartphone telephoto zoom was a game of smoke and mirrors. When you zoom from 1x to 3x, or 3x to 5x, your phone is usually digitally cropping the image from a fixed focal length sensor. This digital interpolation inevitably degrades fine details, increases image noise, and shifts the color profile when the operating system abruptly jumps between physically distinct camera lenses.

The next major frontier in mobile imaging is the integration of true, continuous optical zoom assemblies. Utilizing miniature motorized actuators arranged horizontally within a periscope module, these lenses physically move the glass elements back and forth inside the phone chassis.
